HIP HOP NEWS: Remy Ma Hit with Lawsuit

With a media frenzy already surrounding her, rapper Remy Ma is now in the center of a $10 million civil lawsuit filed against her by friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph. Remy, born Reminisce Smith, is being acused of shooting Barnes-Joseph during a dispute outside a New York nightspot in July. In the suit she claims that she suffered physical harm and mental anguish.

The suit filed by Barnes-Joseph also names the Universal Music Group and Sure Shot Recordings, Remy's record labels, as defendants, claiming that they promote Remy's violent image and utilise it as a tool to sell albums. Meanwhile, Remy's lawyer Ivan Fisher has stated that the former friend is targeting Remy based on her high profile and is out her money.

Remy Ma is set to go on trial next year on charges of gang assault and witness tampering stemming from an incident in August. Reportedly, Remy ordered a group of men to attack the boyfriend of Barnes-Joseph, which resulted in him receiving a broken jaw. Remy Ma has pleaded not guilty to the charges, if convicted she faces up to 25 years in prison.
