Single: Kidz In The Hall - Drivin' Down The Block

When we think we’ve made some kind of progress in the world of Hip Hop, someone always manages to pull it right back down, like crabs in a barrel. Not the best analogy, true, but it has more intelligence than in the entire Drivin’ Down The Block cut by Kidz In The Hall. Yet, the old school flavour of the track tends to be so appealing, it makes it hard to decide whether to listen to it or not.

Drivin’ Down The Block…not hard to believe it’s by a duo called Kidz In The Hall. It seems “The Hall” was exactly where these two spent their time, instead of in English class. All that these lyrics are good for is references to the old school, where they mention their “Low End Theory” tape, and they claim they’re riding “Two Miles an Hour” (referring to The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime”).

If you’ve ever heard The Cool Kids (and if you haven’t it is recommended you do, especially if you like this track), then you will notice a HUGE resemblance. The beat has a modern old school flava (kinda sounds like a reworked NWA jam), with a looped sample of Masta Ace’s Born to Roll. And that’s what’s great about it - NICE, OLD SCHOOL VIBE!!! However, the lyrics are just boring and the quality of this goes track right down into the deep.

This track does serve its purpose, just a no-cares-attached, fun track. So these guys do have potential, and I might even like them someday, but if they bring nothing compelling to the table that is Hip Hop, then the hall is where these Kidz should’ve stayed.
