I am always annoyed when great rappers and real Hip Hop is overlooked. And I am equally pissed off when a track like City Haze’s Brooklyn Streets is remaining unheard.
The first thing about this track which may appeal to fans of more than just Hip Hop is the interpolation of Art Garfunkel’s Just Over The Brooklyn Bridge. Once the heavy beat kicks in, the piano keys hit just the right notes to emit that sense of snowfall – and if you are a fan of the snowy Brooklyn scene, you might just think this track was made specifically for you.
You know you’ve encountered something special when music-induced imagery can capture and captivate you, lulling you into the scene. Oh but wait until the lyrics step in. “This birthplace that we stroll on our own/These Brooklyn Streets – my home/Where the bullies in blue, they tap phones/The fiends need a fix with dough, they need zone” – a hook which immediately sets you into the deep realities of the ghetto, and gives you a taste of what you’re in for.
There is but one little downside here – it does not go over 3 minutes and 23 seconds. It really feels like a bit of a waste when such a talented MC leaves so much room to spit more realness over a hypnotizing instrumental. To summarize this track into one phrase – THIS IS WHAT THE GAME’S BEEN MISSING!
