The gritty side of the American dream is quickly becoming the domain of one man in Hollywood, namely Michael Mann. Following up from Heat and Collateral, Mann has reworked the television show that he once produced, into a fast-paced, sleaze-driven escapade, Miami Vice. Starring current ‘It’ boys Colin Farrell (New World) and Jaimie Foxx (Ray), Mann’s film is a load of unashamed fun.
With very little time given to plot development, the film revels in its obvious trashiness, as Farrell and Foxx wind their way through an attempt to infiltrate a Colombian (of course) drug cartel. The needed female element is provided by the wonderful Gong Li who positively sizzles as Farrell’s seductress. The whole cast is strong to a point, however, they are really not the focus of attention. Mann focuses much of his attention on the feel of the film, a trait that he has developed through his earlier work dating back to Manhunter. The soundtrack is thumping, the cinematography is fantastically eruptive, and the action sequences are truly breathtaking.
Perhaps the real down point is the self-consciousness of Farrell’s performance. For an actor that can evoke such emotion, he truly coasts through this film, relying on his good looks. The enigmatic Li, and the strong Foxx, who both excel, further highlight Farrell’s weak performance.
If you are looking for this year’s dramatic Oscar winner, look elsewhere than Miami Vice. However, if you’re looking for an action-packed good time, then strap yourself in for this wonderful Michael Mann ride.
