Superhero films are strange beasts. They are effectively retelling modern day myths and legends. The generations of today have been brought up not on Zeus and Aphrodite, but on Spiderman, Batman and Wolverine. X-Men 3 signals the end of one the more successful series to adapt these wondrous characters, and has a jolly good time doing it!
Sporting an outstanding cast including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and British Thesps Ian McKlellan and Patrick Stewart, perhaps X-Men 3’s biggest challenge was to fit in all of its star power. Adding to the original stars is the likes of Kelsey Grammar and Vinnie Jones, who both have a great time hamming it up to the max!
Responding to a treatment that has been created to cure mutations, the X-Men must battle the evil Magneto in a power struggle straight of the pages of a pulp comic book. It is in its action sequences that this film is in its element, as there are some major plot flaws. But who cares! Let’s face it, we don’t read a comic book for literary genius, and likewise we don’t watch superhero films, to witness Oscar winning direction and storytelling. The ‘Biff’ and ‘Pow’ is what works best in comic book films, and it certainly doesn’t hurt when some truly great actors are having a great time playing it out.
