September 21st, 2005, 300 hundred hand picked fans, a 17 piece all female string ensemble, and Kanye West looking as he does - extra fly. It doesn't really matter what you think of West, but I don't believe anyone can really argue the fact that he has brought hip hop to a new plateau in live performance and musical ingenuity. Kanye’s Late Orchestration DVD is a concert of his described as the ‘hottest ticket in town’ at the very prestigious Abbey Road Studios.
This concert DVD sees Kanye West perform an array of his most popular tracks from both his albums: College Dropout and Late Registration. Popular tracks such as Touch the Sky and Drive Slow have a whole new element to them thanks to the added string section of the live performance. Having been to Kanye’s concert in Australia (which was bangin’ out the roof by the way), the crowd on the DVD didn’t even compare to the mass I was a part of. Curious to discover why the crowd were so subdued, I initiated a careful scouring of the DVD for some answers. The 300 ‘carefully’ picked crowd attending the concert are actually music industry reps – ranging from other performers to label execs to DJs. Kanye later revealed that this was done because he loves to show people who think they’ve seen it all something new.
The special features of this include several of his Late Registration video clips, along with an exclusive interview with the Louis Vuiton Don himself about what he thought about the whole experience. This is a riveting concert by one of hip hops most pioneering live performers. Anyone into live music can enjoy the energy, passion and musical mastery. All Kanye lovers will probably have this already, but even if you don’t really know the man, or even seen him perform live before, this is a very worthwhile DVD to pick up.
