Alkaholiks certainly are a group that every individual who has both a love for quality Hip Hop and partying must know of. The dudes (Tash, J-Ro and DJ E-Swift) dropped their first album in 1993 and went on strong, gathering a heavy fan base and carrying a load collaborations under their belt until 2006 when they disbanded. However, their final reunion concert Tha Alkaholiks: Live From Rehab is one to be remembered.Performed in Los Angeles, the group came out one more time to give the fans of their home state of California one final sip of Tha Alkaholiks.
Renowned for their party-themed hits, they have become an extremely favoured group over the past decade and a half, and they bring with them to the show exactly what the fans want – party, liquor, guests, freestyles and a barrage of their major hits spanning throughout their career from Dadadada and Run Wild to their world-famous Xzibit-assisted Alkaholik. Even if you are new to The Liks, it’s not hard to get into them.
The crowd, as you can imagine, is simply bewildered by not only the classics that Tha Alkoholiks perform, but also by the countless freestyles which dominate almost half the show.Tash, undoubtedly, drops about half the freestyles performed, each one as ear-opening as the last. This is only added to by the presence of major West-Coast names such as Xzibit and King T, as well as Styliztik Jones, Heltah Skeltah, Defari, Sean Price and more. Of all the freestyles, which almost every MC present unloads on the crowd (Xzibit doing it to make up for lyrics he forgot), Styliztik Jones is hands-down the most maniacal of the bunch; still rhyming a good 16 bars after the beat gets cut, this monster must be seen to be believed.
The only downside to this concert is the freestyle by Big Beat, because it’s just plain boring. No fan of strictly deep and meaningful music should jump into this – these dudes are here to party one last time and it’s as simple as that. The beats are slammin’, the folks are drinkin’, (just about) all the freestyles are hot enough to grill the ears you use to listen to them, there’s an extremely healthy roster of guests, and if you’re not down with straight-up hedonistic get-buckwild tracks which contain a nice dose of raw talent and delivery to balance it all out, well then…get a life.
We all need to party our asses off every once in a while, and Tha Alkaholiks: Live From Rehab is exactly where the party’s at. To put it simply: the guys went out with a BANG!…and still came back for an encore.
