Nya Jade – My Denial

Free Mixtapes

When I first heard this album, I thought Jade was a combination of fellow American artists Dre Allen and Res. Good news is - I love them both! Like Allen and Res, Nya Jade’s album, My Denial, has a strong acoustic guitar base with rock foundations. It focuses on some meaty subjects, while delivering emotion and attitude. My Denial is something that won’t automatically fall into the urban category, but that’s not to say an urban music lover will totally dismiss it. Jade has the voice, writing skills and looks to impress many urban music connoisseurs.

The album opens with One Pill a track about escaping from mental suffering. The title track has more of a hip-hop beat under keys and softer vocals from Nya. Live talks about enjoying the present, while the quicker paced track, Home, talks about enjoying it safely with others. Some heavy electric guitar is used on the tracks Molasses and Sedated (which isn’t very sedate at all!). Next To You adds some diversity with its piano base and stripped back mood. My favourite tune is Leave It All Behind, a track about discarding unwanted personal qualities.

Jade provides most of the guitar and vocals on the LP, making it a show case for her various talents. The range of instruments here battle for attention and it’s hard to choose a winner. Throughout the LP, there are subtle style changes so you won’t get bored listening. Luckily the content on My Denial isn’t cut and dry, so I was kept interested all the way. The album is more folk at times than urban, so I’m not sure if it will appeal to purist lovers of modern R&B. However, anybody with an ear for something fresh will enjoy this.
