I'm going to start this review by keepin’ it completely real with you. I have never liked a single track that's had anything to do with the Cash Money Clique ... EVER! That's why the discovery of this album was such an unbelievable surprise - I like just about every track! Lil Wayne has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run for a team that has struck out consistently for several years now (on my scoreboard anyway). It's apparent that The Carter 2 was a conscious effort by Lil Wayne to step away from the dirty south stereotype. Armed with versatile beats and clever lyrics, Weezy has succeeded 100 percent.
As a MC Weezy has many strengths; his witty lyrics, his outgoing personality and his consistently smooth flow are some of his most obvious. Yet his strengths are definitely not bountiful enough to warrant his extreme arrogance. Tracks like Best Rapper Alive will send a lot of the best MCs into a laughing fit, but at least it's entertaining. Lil Wayne's beat choices on The Carter 2 are impeccable, with undisputed bangers like Fly In/Out, Tha Mob and Carter 2, this album keeps your head banging hard, but still slows down and gives you some breathing room at appropriate intervals. What I like most about this album is the different flavours Weezy provides the listener. He covers all the essentials genres like Crunk, love songs and bangers, but Lil Wayne also surprises his audience by choosing some beats that border on Reggae and even Neo Soul.
Despite Lil Wayne being straight up dirty south, there's a noticeable amount of Jay-Z influences in his music. There is some Jigga not only in his flows but also in some of the beats. Not that I’m complaining at all, it sounds dope and I'd hate to see that Jigga style we've all grown to know and love go to waste. Tracks like Feel Me, Carter 2 are the most obviously influenced tracks but there's traces of Hov in a lot of the tracks here. To summarise The Carter 2 is one classic song away from being a classic album. Catchy hooks, bangin’ beats, entertaining lyrics, what more can you ask for? Stop trying to think of something. Go cop it.
