It’s difficult to know where to begin with Jibbs. He is the man responsible for the chart-topping single Chain Hang Low, which has raised the ire of many critics and fans alike similar to the likes of Chicken Noodle Soup. He has been fashioned as a young heartthrob by the powers that be and has one of the most bizarrely titled albums in a while with Jibbs Feat Jibbs. As he explained himself, the album earned it’s title because he has so many personalities and sides to himself that it’s like a different person on every track.
The St. Louis, Missouri native has a lot to prove and a lot validate. The aforementioned lead single has been heard by pretty much everyone already so it doesn’t need to spoken about. You’ve all formed your own opinion. Proceedings get off to a good start with the very catchy David Banner-crafted Yeah Boii and the repetitive second single King Kong, which will earn a lot of attention thanks to the guest spot by Chamillionaire alone.
Jibbs puts the sing-songy flow on hold temporarily and shows some fire on the stand-out cut Hood, which is driven by a pulsating keyboard beat. It’s a good, if brief, change of pace. The somewhat nauseating Go Too Far, which features Pussy Cat Doll Melody Thornton, and the bass drum-driven Bring It Back fill the club track quotient of the album. The syrupy J. Valentine-featuring Let’s Be Real is in a similar vein of mellow tracks that will supposedly appeal to the female market. According to Jibbs he may have different personalities, however none of them are high on originality or leave a lasting impression.
The album portrays a young artist yet to find his own style or identity, he does have potential. However, potential doesn’t produce great albums, although that hasn’t affected his album sales in the US. If you are not accustomed to the sounds of Chingy or Nelly then this may not be up your alley.
