Sexy, dirty, gritty, this is what a crime film’s soundtrack should sound like. The new Ridley Scott film American Gangster soundtrack does not disappoint.
Kicking off with the fantastically soulful Do You Feel Me from Anthony Hamilton, the theme of this soundtrack is set early. Lowell Fulson's hard blues riff on Why Don’t We Do It On The Road is simply infectious, as is No Shoes from one of the kings of the blues, John Lee Hooker.
Other soul acts, such as Bobby Womack and The Staple Singers pop up, as does the always-fantastic Public Enemy. But it is PE’s sonic architect Hank Shocklee who provides the real surprise. He gives us four of the best, before the album rounds out with the soulful sounds of Marc Streitenfeld.
If the soundtrack is anything to go by, this is a film not to be missed!
