Since first emerging in 1997, the All Good Funk Alliance have released a range of singles, however Social Comment represents their first album release. With funky bass lines and fresh and uplifting lyrics, this is a wonderfully fun album that has stayed on heavy rotation in my house. From the opening single, Codeword for a Change the tone of the album is firmly set.
Combining terrifically funky beats that evoke the work of DJ Krafty Kuts, and the exceptionally talented lyrical work of Swamburger and Alexandrah, Social Comment is a rare beast; it is original! It provides a sound that does evoke other artists but it creates something wonderfully new. Timely Convo is a more hard-hitting track with Swamburger delivering his flow with a spitting force that requires the listener to pay attention. Direct me to a Remedy is a funk and jazz infused track that simply oozes style and Swamburger’s lyrics mirror the upbeat feeling of the music. On this track and others, Alexandrah’s enchantingly simple voice provides great contrast to Swam’s complex lyrics, whilst her voice often reflects the feel of the music.
Perfect for a summer’s afternoon, the All Good Funk Alliance’s Social Comment is also great for any listener who wants to be transported to a place where music is pure, lyrics and harmony flow, and most of all, life is good.
