Here, Pitbull (Mr “too latin for Hip Hop and too Hip Hop for latin”) strikes again with his latest studio album, The Boatlift, delivering just what we have come to expect from him – 60 minutes of jam packed entertainment. An undisputed force in the reggaeton movement, Pitbull is more than just your average rapper. He’s involved in the writing of almost everything on the album and uses a wide range of producers, including Lil Jon and Play N Skillz. Pitbull is known for his killer beats, and catchy hooks that usually showcase at least one other artist. Besides releasing several records of his own, he’s also featured in many chart-topping remixes for other Latin and hip hop based artists. On top of all this, the chico can actually rap.
Pitbull’s last album, El Mariel, packed dance floors worldwide and had crowds screaming lyrics they couldn’t even understand. Though expectations are high, The Boatlift doesn’t fall short. He continues to impress with sure-fire bangers like Go Girl and Fuego, irrefutably two of his best beats to date. The booty shaking club joints that have become Pitbull’s staple are still evident with Dukey Love and The Anthem. Midnight is sure to be a favourite, not only for Latin and hip hop lovers, but also for those in house music circles as it can transform into a cross-over surprise. However, The Boatlift is not only for the clubs. R&B lovers will be pleased with the first single, Secret Admirer featuring Lloyd. We also see the softer, chilled out side to Pitbull on My Life with up-and-comer Jason Derulo, and in the Tell Me remix, with Frankie J.
The evolution of the Latin and Hip Hop blend is only moving forward, and reggaeton has found its permanent home in the urban scene. So many artists shake up the Hip Hop world with an off the hook joint people can’t get enough of, and then are never heard of again. Pitbull is one of the few that continue to fill the dance floors and this latest release suggests he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
