I was excited to listen to another Aussie R&B singer doing well... until I heard her album.
Felicia Alima's album Know Me, features mostly boring music coupled with a vocal style that sounds like a direct rip off of Ciara. It is very hard to take this album seriously. In fact, her opening song Know Me starts exactly the same way lyrically as Ciara’s massive single, 1, 2, Step. I wouldn’t say the album is completely awful. I mean, I did find one track that I dug. The fourth track on the album I’m Down is an acoustic guitar inspired bouncy club-friendly joint featuring rapper Phoenix. Unfortunately, two tracks later she rips off Prince’s classic When Doves Cry for the flow of the song.
I guess I’m harsh on Aussie talent because I want to see it do well. I feel that as long as people keep pissing in the pocket of average singers, we will keep getting average singers representing urban music in Australia.
When Felicia is put up against a quality singer, by comparison you can hear the obvious weakness in her voice. Take a track like Tonight for example. She is joined by Nathan Latimore from American R&B group Jersey Ave on a great beat, and is massively outshined. Felicia has a very limited range vocally that seems to sound almost like she’s not even singing. In fact she sounds like she’s doing little more than talking in time.
Felicia Alima has won international awards, so I’m sure others think she’s a great talent and has a long career ahead of her. Unfortunately I’m not one of those people.

ouch!
I felt like that review was a tad bit harsh! I know she has to improve but i respect her hustle and with time i think she can improve. this was a self funded project and she did manage to get a decent attention. I do agree with you on the fact she needs 2 find her own ground and feel more comfortable on tracks
I can dig it!
To each it's own! I loved the album, and I love the fact that she is keeping the topics of her songs positive!!!
And with production from producers that did songs for the Pussycat Dolls... how could you say that's boring???
Felicia has a very soulful, oldschool vibe, and I think it works for her. And why are we comparing anyways? That's why Aussie artists don't get the respect that they deserve. Coz when someone comes out of Australia, we always have to compare them to US artists, and therefore it's not good enough. Stop using the US to bench-mark Aussie music. She has her own style and I dig it!
I'm a fan of Felicia Alima, and I think "Know Me" is a great debut for her, and I can't wait to see what's next.

I'M DOWN WITH FELICIA!
SEE, THATS THE PROBLEM AUSSIE ARTISTS FACE! YA'LL ARE SOME DAMN HATERS! IF YA'LL WOULD JUST STOP BAGGING EACH OTHER AND START SUPPORTING EACH OTHER, THERE WOULD BE MORE AUSSIE ACTS OUT THERE! I'M FROM PERTH AND I KNOW WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS LIKE AND ITS TOUGH TO COME OUT OF AUSTRALIA AND MAKE IT IN THE US. I LIVE IN DETROIT NOW AND I NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE, PEOPLE HERE SUPPORT HOME GROWN TALENT.
I'VE GOT HER ALBUM AND I'VE BEEN TO ONE OF HER SHOWS HERE IN DETROIT AND SHE WAS AWESOME!! MY FAVOURITE SONGS ARE "ADDICTED", "LEAVIN' HERE TONIGHT" AND "I'M DOWN". D-TOWN LOVES FELICIA ALIMA!
